By Sunil Salve

A humiliating defeat at two important seats in bye elections: Bankipur (182) in Bihar and Datia (22) in Madhya Pradesh augured badly for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP succeeded in winning only one Manjalpur (145) seat in Gujarat where party's candidate Satish Patel won the election. Prashant Kishor whose Jan Surajt Party has been struggling since its inception and fared badly in Bihar Vidhan Sabha elections, posed a threat to the BJP by winning its stronghold Bankinpur seat. The seat was vacated by existing MLA Nitin Nabin after he was installed as national president of BJP. The BJP president could not retain his base.

On the other hand, the ruling Party BJP deployed all machineries, Chief Minister, Ministers in order to ensure win Datia seat in MP, but to no avail. Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh won the seat by the lowest margin of 6016 votes. BJP had fielded Ashutosh Tiwari instead of Narottam Mishra, a former Home Minister.
