Tourism Secretary unveils Official T-Shirt for Second Edition of "Mussoorie Ultra Marathon"
Runners from India and abroad will race on the hills of Mussoorie on November 29th; Target for 600-700 Participants

The official T-shirt for the second edition of the "Mussoorie Ultra Marathon," being organized by the Mussoorie Hotel Association, was unveiled today by Dhiraj Singh Garbyal, Secretary, Tourism, Uttarakhand Government. Present on the occasion were Abhishek Ruhela, Additional Secretary, Tourism. Also present were officials and representatives of the Mussoorie Hotel Association and various stakeholders from the tourism sector.

This marathon furthers the dream of the late Tom Alter, renowned actor and Padma awardee. He envisioned Mussoorie as a major hub for running, fitness, and a healthy lifestyle. This dream was not realized during his lifetime, after which local citizens and organizers resolved to carry it forward.

It is noteworthy that the first edition, held last year on November 23, 2025, was a huge success. A total of 411 runners from various states and countries participated. In the 50 km ultra marathon category, Tsewang, an Indian Army soldier from Ladakh, took first place, completing the race in 3 hours and 40 minutes. This event infused new energy into Mussoorie, the Queen of the Hills, during the relatively low-tourism winter season.

Given the enthusiastic response to the first edition, the event has been expanded this year. The second edition features five categories for runners of varying experience and fitness levels: a 50 km ultra marathon, a 42.2 km full marathon, a 10 km, a 5 km, and a 1 km run. So far, more than 300 runners from outside Mussoorie have registered. Registration has also been opened to local residents, and the organizers are targeting a total of 600–700 participants.

Held at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet, amidst mountainous terrain and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, this race offers runners a completely different experience from traditional races in the plains. This event promotes a healthy lifestyle in keeping with the spirit of Fit India. It also strengthens sports and adventure tourism in the state. The arrival of runners from outside, along with their family and friends, is expected to generate additional business for hotels, restaurants, taxis, and local markets.

On this occasion, Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Singh Garbyal stated that such adventure and sports tourism events play a vital role in promoting year-round tourism in the state. He expressed hope that the second edition would be as successful as last year. He stated that this event would increase tourist traffic to Mussoorie during the winter season and benefit local businesses and the hotel industry.

Officials of the Mussoorie Hotel Association expressed gratitude to the Tourism Department and the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council for their support. This event is being organized in collaboration with the Mussoorie Sports Association, the Uttarakhand Government, and the Tourism Department. The second edition of the Mussoorie Ultra Marathon will be held on 29 November 2026.
