Successful completion of NLCIL’s first supercritical thermal power project

Successful completion of NLCIL’s first supercritical thermal power project
Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a Joint Venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49%), has achieved a landmark milestone with the successful declaration of Commercial Operation Date (COD) of Unit-3 (660 MW) of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project (GTPP) effective from 00:00 hours on June 13, 2026.

Unit-3 was successfully synchronized with the grid on April 03, 2026, marking a major milestone towards commissioning of the final unit of the project. Thereafter, first coal firing was successfully achieved on April 22, 2026, Subsequently, Unit-3 achieved Full Load Operation on May 6, 2026.  The unit thereafter successfully completed the mandatory 72-hour continuous full-load trial operation in a smooth and uninterrupted manner, leading to the declaration of Commercial Operation (COD) effective from 00:00 hours on June 13, 2026 and marking the successful completion of NLCIL’s first supercritical thermal power project.

With the declaration of COD of Unit-3, the entire 1980 MW (3x660 MW) Ghatampur Thermal Power Project is now under commercial operation, significantly strengthening reliable and sustainable power supply to the State of Uttar Pradesh and contributing substantially to the nation’s growing energy requirements.

Union Minister for Coal, Kishan Reddy, while appreciating this milestone achievement of NLCIL in his X platform, congratulated NUPPL and all stakeholders on the successful declaration of the COD for Unit-3 of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, bringing the total installed capacity of the 1,980 MW project to full operational status. This landmark achievement reflects the vision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance energy security, expand infrastructure, and build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The project will play a vital role in meeting the nation's growing energy needs and powering India's development journey.

Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and Chairman, NUPPL, conveyed his greetings and appreciation to all stakeholders associated with the project. In his message, he noted that the successful commissioning of all three units of the GTPP marks a significant milestone and exemplifies the collective commitment, perseverance, and teamwork of all stakeholders in advancing the nation’s energy security through the creation of reliable power generation infrastructure.

During the event, Samir Swarup, Director (HR), NLCIL, Rajesh Pratap Singh Sisodia, Director (Power) (Additional Charge), NLCIL, Durai Kumar S, Chief Executive Officer- NUPPL, Prasun Ray, Chief Finance Officer- NUPPL, were also present.

The Unit-1 and Unit-2 of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant (GTPP) were successfully commissioned and commenced their commercial operation on December 12, 2024 and December 09, 2025 respectively. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dedicated the Unit-1 (660 MW) of the GTPP to the Nation by virtual mode on May 30, 2025 in a grandfunction held at Kanpur Nagar. Till 31st May’2026, Units-1 & 2 of this project have generated 6107 MUs of electricity, resulting in revenue of INR 4756 Cr.

With Unit-3 commercially operational, GTPP is now delivering its full 1980 MW capacity to the state & national grid. This major capacity addition will significantly support the growing electricity demand of the nation and boost the economy, particularly of the State of Uttar Pradesh. Further, with commissioning of all three units, the thermal station is expected to generate 14,743 MUs annually, which will be meeting the energy requirements of approximately 12 million average Indian households annually. Consequently, the project will also witness a significant increase in annual revenue to 8,453 Cr in a year.

Presently, as per the power allocation by Ministry of Power, Government of lndia, 93.11% of Power generated from this project is allocated to the State of Uttar Pradesh. Further, balance power from this project is being allocated to various states, promoting inter-state energy equity.

The project underscores NUPPL's commitment to environmental sustainability, incorporating supercritical boiler and turbine-generator sets, Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies, and Zero Liquid Discharge systems to meet stringent environmental standards.

Beyond power generation, the project has emerged as a major catalyst for socio-economic development. During peak construction phase, the project provided direct employment to nearly 8,500 workers, while presently more than 4,000 contract workers are engaged at the site. With all three units under operation, the project is expected to generate around 25,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, creating significant economic benefits for the region and the State of Uttar Pradesh.

NUPPL is also progressing steadily with the development of the captive Pachwara South Open Cast Project (PSOCP) in Dumka District, Jharkhand, which will provide a sustainable fuel source for the power plant. The Mining operations already commenced on 19.12.2025, with coal exposure achieved on 29.03.2026. Commercial coal production from the mine is expected to commence in a phased manner from FY 2026-27, ensuring long-term fuel security for the project.

With the successful declaration of COD of Unit-3, NUPPL has transformed the vision of the 1980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project into reality, reaffirming its commitment towards powering India’s growth journey with reliable, efficient and sustainable energy while contributing meaningfully to the nation’s vision of energy self-reliance and inclusive development.
