POWERGRID acquires SPV for 6 GW renewable energy evacuation project in Rajasthan
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has acquired Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited, the Project Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established for the development of an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework for evacuation of renewable energy from Barmer area in the state of Rajasthan.

The SPV Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited was acquired on 23rd September 2026 from the Bid Process Coordinator (BPC) REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited.

Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited will implement the transmission system associated with the Inter-State Transmission Project “Transmission system for evacuation of power from Rajasthan REZ Ph-IV (Part-5: 6 GW) [Barmer Complex] Barmer-II: 6 GW (Solar) (LCC Configuration)”. This system comprises establishment of 400 kV Barmer-II Pooling Station (PS) in Rajasthan along with 400 kV Barmer-II – Barmer-I D/c line, LILO of both circuits of 400 kV Fatehgarh-IV – Barmer-I D/c line at Barmer-II PS and augmentation at South Kalamb S/s with 4 nos. of 765/400 kV, 1500MVA ICTs. The HVDC portion of the scheme includes establishment of ± 800 kV, 6000 MW Barmer-II(HVDC) [LCC] terminal station, ± 800 kV, 6000 MW, South Kalamb (HVDC) [LCC] terminal station along with Barmer-II – South Kalamb ±800 kV HVDC Bipole Line. Further, the project also involves installation of 2 Nos. of Syncon units at 400kV level of Barmer-II PS.

This project is a major step towards strengthening India's renewable energy transmission infrastructure and facilitating large-scale integration of solar power into the national grid. POWERGRID, though its various Projects SPVs which have been acquired through tariff bidding route, is implementing various Transmission System Projects being constructed on build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis. These Projects will augment the Indian transmission infrastructure to evacuate Green Energy to the National Grid thereby reducing dependency on fossil fuels, in line with Government of India’s vision of achieving 500 GW renewable energy target by year 2030.

As of 31st August 2026, POWERGRID has commissioned and is operating 292 Sub-Stations and more than 1,86,952 ckm transmission lines and 6,38,566 MVA of transformation capacity. With the adoption of the latest technological tools and techniques, enhanced use of automation and digital solutions, POWERGRID has been able to maintain an average transmission system availability of more than 99.80%.
