Transforming Kolkata’s riverfront: Blending modern infrastructure with heritage
The discussion centered on a transformative vision for the Hooghly Riverfront—stretching from Maaer Ghat (Bagbazar) to Millennium Park Ghat. The focus is to create a vibrant, people-centric public space while ensuring sustainable urban development and seamless city connectivity.
A Vision of Living Heritage:
During the session, Sanyal strongly advocated for upgrading the quality of urban life while strictly preserving the old essence of both sides of the Hooghly. He emphasized that iconic elements of Kolkata’s cultural fabric—such as the historic Mullick Ghat Flower Market and the traditional Kushti Akhras (wrestling arenas)—should be modernized and integrated, rather than replaced.
The high-level session was attended by: Rathendra Raman, Chairperson, SMPK; Samrat Rahi, Deputy Chairperson, SMPK; Devidatta Satpathy, Chief Vigilance Officer, SMPK.
Senior Port Officials, distinguished urban experts, and representatives from The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I). Together, SMPK and its partners are committed to shaping a greener, more accessible, and culturally rooted waterfront for the City of Joy.
